Do batteries in parallel or in a series produce more electricity than a single battery?
I did a battery lab in school and im just questioning my results. We made a zinc copper battery which had a voltage of about 1.1v. When we connected 2 of them in a series the voltage was .340v. When they were in parallel they were 30mv. Can anyone that is knowledgeable about batteries let me know if this seems right? To me it seems like common sense that the parallel and series should put out more voltage than a single battery.
It depends how you placed them in series. Series opposing will cancel the voltages, and the difference in the batteries would be the voltage. Series not opposing will add the voltages together.
So 2 batteries of the same voltage facing positive to positive will cancel each other, while 2 batteries facing positive to negative will add the voltages.
Parallel batteries will not add. Branches in a parallel circuit will always have the same voltage.
Edit: To conclude, 2 batteries in series will have more voltage than a single battery. 2 batteries in parallel will not (though they will have more current).
