Nope and this is not a matter of a Discus being a cichlid and putting it with a non cichild either. I'm trying to kill off that fallacy in this forum. It's simply a matter of a Discus is a tropical fish and Goldfish are cold water types, and not to mention, this is a MAJOR challenge that isn't for everyone. I've conversed with some very professional fish keepers on other forums, and it's very possible to get goldfish to adapt to tropical temps, but they won't do quite as well. However, given the waste output of goldfish, even if you do this properly, and the high sensitivity of the Discus to water quality, this isn't a good candidate to mix. I'd give a project like this, about a 5% chance of working out.
Let me clear that up too. By working out, I mean keeping the group a full life period, not just a few months or years either. If your tank is large enough, in this case, we're probably talking about a minimum of like a 150 and up for a pair of Discus and goldfish, you might get this to work out. You need to give space if you have a mating pair of Discus, so the Goldfish don't get harassed if they mate. But, if you don't give enough space here, the Discus are going to become stressed by the Goldfish just as much as the Goldfish by the Discus and Discus just don't tolerate things like this very well. I'd use a VERY large tank to even try this, and at that point, you'd probably find just keeping Discus alone more worth the effort of trying to incorporate Goldfish into a tank like that.
