SPIRULINA - The Super Food
Spirulina is a type of blue green algae that has been proven to have huge amounts of proteins, B vitamins, beta-carotene, and iron. Due to its nutrients, it's been considered as a superfood and is recommended for malnourished people. It is for this reason that its cultivation is encouraged particularly in countries with the highest malnutrition rate.
How is spirulina cultivated?
Apart from being cultivated for countries with rampant malnourishment, Spirulina is also being cultivated for commercial and public consumption. The domestic cultivation method is called 'Mud Pot Spirulina Cultivation'. In this method, what are needed are three mud pots with a capacity of 35-40 liters, and an open area. You would also need pure Spirulina culture, bio gas slurry and a mixture of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, cooking soda and sodium chloride.
Spirulina is also cultivated for commercial use by growing it in shallow artificial ponds, with the use of paddle wheels to stir the water so that spirulina can grow.
Spirulina Nutrients
- A single serving of Spirulina containts 325 calories, from which 13% come from total fats.
- Spirulina is packed with essential amino acids and complete proteins. A 112g serving of spirulina has around 64g of protein, which is higher than in most protein rich foods.
- Spirulina contains high levels of GLA which is a fatty acid that helps prevents and treats inflammation. This is the same fatty acid found in vegetable oils but in slightly lower content compared to the Spirulina.
- Spirulina is loaded with Vitamins like Vitamin A. A cup of Spirulina contains 13% Vitamin A and 19% Vitamin C. Spirulina also contains vitamins like Vitamin B1, B2, B6 and B9.
- Minerals: Spirulina has high levels of potassium, calcium, iron, chromium, selenium, and phosphorus.

Help! My Black widow tetra is getting lots of black spots on it!!?
I've had my black widow tetra for about 3 months or so and i noticed black spots and small patches on it, it started to get worse every week.
I researched and the only black spot disease i found was black ich, but ich/ick is like grains of salt (very tiny)
But mine are like biggger tiny patches, there are some tiny ones and some medium sized.
Oh and my black widow tetra might be a little obese (very very fat) because they are extremely fast at eating food that they finish it before my other fish do (another black widow tetra which is fat and obese too, black sailfin molly, and 2 pink kissing gouramis)
hehe, i feed my fish spirulina flakes twice daily.
Please help! And how can i help my 2 black widow tetras lose weight? It is like the adult size now, except not as slim as before!
From tip to tail, estimating, i think is about 6 to 7cm!
It stomach bulges out that u can even see it bulge out from its side view!
Would its weight and diet have anything to do with its spots?
How are the other fish in the tank? You can sometimes get black spots from ammonia burn if the filter's not holding up, but you'd expect other symptoms (red inside the gills, looking uncomfortable etc) and other fish to be affected. Does it look like spots or just like natural colouration that's spreading? If they are colouring up naturally they are probably just happy!
Obesity? Well, fish have stomachs the approximate size of their eye so if you're feeding more than your tankful can fit in their stomachs in one sitting that's too much! You could always feed a variety of foods at one time so everyone gets some - I feed micropellets (like coloured dust) at the same time as larger pellets and flake so there's food of different sizes and some float while others sink and distract different fish, etc. But still, don't overfeed! If you want to skip a day, they won't starve. I feed my tetras once every other day and they are absolutely fine.
If it's really bulging from the stomach it could have a pest e.g. worms or fluke - in which case, try treating with something like Sterazin. But I would only expect fish to get infected if there's been a recent change to the tank - new fish for example - or if the water quality's poor.
To be honest the best thing I would do is just keep the water quality good with changes, feed sparingly, and see how you go for a few days.
