Having a balanced diet is essential for aquarium fish, I would recommend that you buy any fish food in small bags or containers rather than bulk buying, this is because over time the vitamin content will gradually decline so to keep your fish food in optimum condition and as fresh as possible buy smaller bags and keep them in a cool dry place.
Anything that is introduced into your fish aquarium should be properly taken care of and monitored, it is important to keep the water in the tank clean by checking for parasites, fungi and bacteria.
Although maintaining a fish aquarium is an ongoing task certain fish can lighten the load, it is well worth investing in fish that scavenge as they will clean the tank for you however it is vital to research the type of fish you buy to ascertain if they can live peacefully with the other fish residing within your tank.
It may be a good idea to create yourself a daily monthly and weekly 'to do' list so you can be sure that you have made all the necessary checks on the temperature control, lighting and feeding.

What's the difference between a protein skimmer on marine tanks and a over the edge filter canister for FW?
I'm considering starting a Saltwater tank but I've had loads of experience with freshwater tanks and have lots of extra equipment/tanks on hand to start a new hobby. I was wondering if I could use the same items for the SW tank that I did with my fresh water hobby? If not. Why?
Also, I'm starting small. No corals, live rocks, anemones. Nothing that would require special lights. Basically, I want to keep it as simple as possible and pick the fish that I'm told are the hardiest for newbies. A clown fish(nemo type), a blue/yellow-tailed damsel, a four stripped/black tail damsel and a firefish and some red-legged or blue-legged crabs for clean up. That's it. Would appreciate some imput.
Skimmers are completely useless on freshwater, Katie sorry, but you just wasted money on a sub par filter
Skimmers and hob filters are different in every way other than water flows through them and they are for filtration
Skimmers utilize foam fractionation and the high surface tension of saltwater to whip errant dissolved protagenous wastes into a foam for collection and removal
Hob filters are for mechanical filtration, removing solid waste
I'd recommend a skimmer if you have the money. $150 would get you a good skimmer for a 30-50 gallon tank
Live rock requires NO care and could be maintained in a bucket with a heater, I HIGHLY recommend picking up at least a few pounds
I'd also leave out the striped damsel, especially if you're getting a small tank
