Tetra Whisper Internal filter (micro) carbon questions?
Ok, so I have a Tetra Whisper Internal filter (micro) that came with my 5 gallon tank. I am wondering if I can add some ammonia crystals or some other carbon on top of the carbon packs that come with the replacement filter cartridges. If so, what type of carbon is the best? I am wondering about Marineland diamond blend. Is it any good?

I'm not familiar with the specific filter you are referring to, but is it the kind of filter cartridge where you add your own carbon (included with the cartridges) and seal it in? If so, then yes you can. (If it is an already assembled cartridge that includes the carbon inside of it, add you want to add it to your filter, then no.) What kind of carbon is the best? That's sort of relative. You certainly want to avoid cheap brands (like tetra, top fin, aqueon) and go with name brands that are well known for making quality products (like marineland, hagen, seachem), as these are the kind that will last longer (because in fact activated carbon really doesn't last all that long). Marineland, I would say, makes everything quality. Diamond blend would be a great choice, though there is probably something else out there that is superior. Ammonia crystals work by converting NH3 (ammonia) to NH4 (ionized ammonia, called ammonium), which is much much less toxic to fish.
