Water gardens with decorative features such as fountains and waterfalls are usually quite treasured by their owners. Fountains are the more refined of the two requiring delicately timed water movements to produce amazing visual effects. Two variables are important for a water fountain to achieve the desired visual outcome. These are the speed at which the water flows and the quantity of water required in the flow.
The delicate nature of fountains means they need very accurate pumps that will ensure a water garden brings out the desired landscaping objective. Fountain pumps are used to supply these fountains and choosing the right pump for a given fountain is essential and requires various considerations.
Fountain pumps work by pumping water upwards through the cascades designed to create a certain visual effect. They regulate the rate at which the water flows through these cascades so that the desired visual effect is maintained over a period of time.
Before installing a fountain pump you are advised to consult a professional since a pump with the right power output is completely essential if the fountain is to operate effectively. If you decide to go about it yourself, there are two considerations that you will need to put in mind.
First you need to consider the power of the pump in terms of gallons per hour or gallons per minute. These are both measures of the quantity of water the pump can circulate over a given period of time.
The second factor you need to consider is the max head which means the maximum height to which the pump can push water above itself. This is usually given in terms of feet and a pump with a max head of 5 feet means it has the ability to push water up to 5 feet above itself.
The type of fountain pump you decide to buy will therefore depend on the amount of water and the height to which it must be propelled in order to accomplish the visual effect the fountain is designed to bring out. These calculations could be difficult and you are advised to consult with the landscaping company that designed the fountain for your water garden. This way you will be able to get the exact figures for both the max head and GPH required from a fountain pump to achieve the visual effects.
If you plan on using one pump for a pond and a fountain then you must also consider some other factors. Since your pond requires circulation at a certain rate, you have to consider both the volume of the pond and the distance of the fountain from the pond before purchasing a fountain pump. Usually this would mean purchasing a submersible fountain pump with a very high GPH since running these processes at the same time would require some massive power.
You are however advised to have a separate pond pump for your pond and another stand alone fountain pump for your fountain to ensure it operates effectively at all times.

A truly quiet desktop fountain pump?

Sure, you already have the fountain, put a piece of the material you see to put under rugs -- looks like an open weave fabric except it is coated with rubber. this is a non - skid product but it will isolate the pump reservoir from the desk top thus the sound is not conducted to the desk top which has become a sounding board. You could even try putting a small piece of this same product under the pump inside the reservoir.
