The Three Little Fishes Phosban Phosphate Reactor Review
Many Aquarists will use a phosphate reducing media such as "Rowaphos" that is simply dangled into a high flow area in a fine filter sock in the aquarium. Then many months or a year later discover algae is taking over the aquarium. This problem happens to many, then hobbyists say things like "I cant understand why it's there" The most common reason for this is that the level of phosphates have slowly increased and the media not working effectively as it should. For the media to work to its full potential it needs to be fluidized in a reactor. This is not as expensive as it sounds.
The phosban reactor from Three Little Fishes is cheap to buy, no more than the price of a regular sized coral. It is easily set up with full comprehensive fitting instructions with the choice of hanging the reactor on the aquarium or in sump fitment. It is run by a simple power-head like a small maxi-jet that you may already use in your aquarium. Flow is controlled by a simple ball valve that is included. Maintenance is minimal, simply remove reactor, clean, and then replace the media.
There is only one minor problem found with this reactor and that is the pipes provided that fit on the top of the hose-tails are not very tight and leak, but this problem is easily resolved by the use of good quality cable ties or pipe clamps. Please be aware to complete installation you will also require a power-head and a small amount tubing. That's it, enjoy a algae free aquarium. Just don't forget to change your media monthly.
